Big Book Anon Workshop: Step Twelve: Spiritual awakening (quotations)

Spiritual awakening

The spiritual awakening is a realisation that we are not alone and helpless; we have learned certain truths which we are now able to carry to others in order to help them. ODAT 178

For most of us, a spiritual awakening has been a gradual process—through practising the Twelve Steps we found ourselves experiencing a degree of honesty, tolerance, unselfishness, serenity, and love which seemed impossible before recovery. Working the S-Anon Programme 28

One definition of a spiritual awakening is the ability to do, feel, and believe, through God’s power, that which a person could not do before with his or her own power. Working the S-Anon Programme 28

Although a spiritual awakening is a highly personal experience, many of us define it as a kind of transformation, a radical change in perception that occurs as a result of our taking the Steps … we experience a gradual awakening of the spirit, a gentle metamorphosis in the way we see ourselves and others, a slow and subtle unfolding of our own inner beauty. How Al-Anon Works 63

We have awakened to a concept of a loving G-d in our lives. S-Anon Twelve Steps 143

This spiritual awakening is a gift that raises us to a higher level of awareness and gives us hope. S-Anon Twelve Steps 143

We truly have changed. We have received the grace of G-d, which simply means a ‘fee gift’. S-Anon Twelve Steps 143

Working the Steps has given each of us a spiritual awakening; some awakenings are dramatic, and some are gradual; they can only be seen though hindsight, yet our experience suggests that they have much in common. S-Anon Twelve Steps 182

How do we know when we have it? Some of us have had vivid, dramatic experiences that clearly were spiritual awakenings. We felt changed … However most of us found our spiritual awakening to be a much slower, more subtle experience, more like a flower opening petal by petal than like a flash of lightning. Willingness

I will keep myself ready for the spiritual awakening which is certain to come to me when I have surrendered my will to God’s will. ODAT 178

Action

Taking the Steps is an ongoing learning experience in which every action brings us a new awareness of ourselves. How Al-Anon Works 43

But all of the Steps are ‘action’ Steps, and each one has a crucial role to play in the process of recovery. How Al-Anon Works 43

We have seen the importance of ‘walking the walk’ not just ‘talking the talk’. S-Anon Twelve Steps 144

Service work helps ensure that I keep what I have been given. Service helps me grow. Reflections of Hope 183
